A Fresh Start In Canada

By Rochelle-Ann Thomas

When my husband and I moved to Canada from Jamaica five years ago, we realized that the best way to build a lasting legacy for our kids was to revive our Media company we had in Jamaica called CSD Multimedia.

However, we realized that operating a business here in Canada is completely different from back home.

We were struggling with funding as we wanted to fund our business without taking a loan so early in the business, but with both of us making close to minimum wage at our jobs, it was next to impossible.

What we had to do was narrow down our services from a host of multimedia offers to just photography and video. We also limited marketing to social media and trade shows.

Another struggle was expanding our reach beyond our Black Canadian community. To solve this we joined many networking groups and even though we have had a few clients outside our race, we are still mostly serving the Black community, specifically church family and friends.

One passion of ours is working on videos like promos and short films, currently, we are working on a docuseries called Faith, Hope…Love, an intimate look at couples in Ministry.

One advice I have for other small business owners is to make sure the business is about more than making money; Make it about something you enjoy. Mompreneurs, fight the mom guilt and find a system that works for you and your family. At the end of the day, everything we do is for our family.
